In 1958 John Aspinall set up his unique Wild Animal Park with the vision of saving and nurturing endangered species from around the world. His approach to animal welfare, husbandry and breeding flew in the face of contemporary practice that still considered captive animals as little more than a source of entertainment for paying visitors

Today the legacy is carried forth with Damian Aspinall, the son of the prolific wildlife activist. In 1984 John Aspinall set up a British Charity named The Aspinall Foundation which would fund two well known English zoos: Port Lympne Zoo and Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, England. Both Zoos operate with the intention of protecting rare and endangered animals, and return them to protected areas in the wild.

One of the greatest accomplishments the Aspinall Foundation has achieved in recent years is the successful reintroduction of gorillas back to the West of the African continent. Many of these gorillas are born in Hewletts Wild Animal Park, raised, and later introduced to the Congo Basin forest ecosystem. In 2004 The Aspinall Foundation saw the first birth to a reintroduced gorilla.
The Aspinall Foundation also operates outside Britain managing two gorilla rescue and rehabilitation projects in the Republic of Congo and Gabon.
